formats can you handle?
All common Office/text editing formats, such as DOC, RTF, TXT, XLS, CSV, MDB. Many DTP work formats, such as FrameMaker, Quark, PageMaker. All 'software string' formats, such as RC. Many help or web-oriented formats, such as HTML, ASP. If you use any other application/format for your project, please contact us to see if we can handle it. Very probably, we can.
2. What is Neutral Spanish?
Just as the English spoken and written in North America differs from the English spoken and written in the UK, there are different 'brands' of Spanish. The Spanish spoken and written in Mexico differs from the Spanish spoken and written in Spain. So do the 'brands' of Spanish spoken and written in Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, and many other countries. Usually, a distinction is made between 'Latin-American Spanish' and 'European Spanish'. However, even 'Latin-American Spanish' has many different 'brands', as there are many different countries and linguistic peculiarities throughout Latin America.
We specialize in 'European Spanish' -i.e., Spanish for Spain- and in 'Neutral Spanish'. Neutral Spanish is conceived as a 'brand' of Spanish that can be understood and is suitable for any Spanish-speaking country.
3. What is a translation memory?
A translation memory is basically a database of translations. Simplifying the concept, this kind of database contains pairs of sentences, both in the source language (say, English) and the target language (for instance, Spanish). For each piece of source text, the database contains the corresponding piece of target text. While translating, translators can access to and use existing translations contained in the database. This serves a number of purposes, the most notorious being: a) a very high degree of consistency across large volumes of words; b) the possibility of leveraging materials previously translated using translation memories; c) translations at a higher speed - though this is not always guaranteed.
There are many translation memory software applications and tools in the market. We primarily use one called Trados.
With this technology, your company can use the Spanish we provide for ulterior versions or additional materials on the same subject, possibly saving hundreds of dollars or more.
